Competent, qualified nail technicians and manicurist are always in demand by nail bars, salon and agencies.  Usual qualifications for nail technician jobs are NVQ level 2/3 In Beauty Therapy, Nail Services or international equivalent.

Nail Technicians Uniform

Nail technicians will be required to wear a unifrom at all times. Usually standard salon uniforms are supplied such as those provided by Salon Uniforms Beauty Wear.  If you are required to choose a uniform yourself look for one that is hard wearing but lightweight.  There are many uniforms made with cooling fabrics on the market today.  These are most comfortable for all day wear.

The Nail Technician Position

As a nail technician your duties would typically include cleaning and preparing nails, foot and hand baths, massaging, decorating nails, applying gels, acrylics, nail art, manicures, pedicures, applying false nails and extensions.

Other tasks may involve repairing broken nails and adviseing clients on how to care for their nails.

Working Hours

Normal full-time working hours for nail technicans working in salon are around 37 hours. You may be expected to work extra hours at busy periods or indeed work at weekends.

Nail Technican Salary

Junior nail technicians can expect to earn around £12000 pa. Senior or self employed nail technicans can earn in excess of £25000 pa.

Nail Technican Opportunities

The nail industry is growing fast and there are many opportuinites and prospects available.  Beauty salons, nail bars , spas and health clubs are the largest employer of nail technicians. For those with a business mind going mobile may be an option.  Mobile nail technicians can work from home and travel to visit clients in their own homes.  For the more exotic, there are contracts and positions in luxurious nail bars aboard cruise ships.  These positions usually provide extensive training at dock locations before embarking out to sea on the vessel. Although a very exciting career you should expect to be away from home for some time.
